Moving to Heal. Exercise your way to rehab…

Movement to heal! Exercise your way to rehabilitate and injury!

It’s no secret that movement heals the body. That is the premise of Pilates. Joseph Pilates was a firm believer that through movement your body stays alive and heals itself. I agree and I live my life espousing this principle!

Injury throughout our lives is a given. How you deal with your injury dictates your recovery. First, psychologically you must know that injury is temporary for most of us. If you surrender to your injury and define yourself as injured, chances are, you will fall into a rut and feel down about yourself and how the injury has impacted your life negatively.

Second, physically you will feel the impact of the injury. You will be in pain, feel unbalanced, uncomfortable and you may start to notice other areas of your body feel tight or weak. Again, keep moving. Stay within the parameters of what your doctor tells you, but remember, you must keep moving other areas of your body to heal. You must also move the muscles around the injury. This will promote healing! Staying immobile will not benefit you. Likewise, staying mentally stagnant, will keep you “stuck” in your injury, unable to move past your disappointment and discomfort.

Joseph Pilates believed that movement heals the body. I submit to you that movement of the body as well as the brain heals the body. When you are injured, exercise or move your body as best you can and when you can to promote recovery. The body will heal as the brain propels the body to move!
